Your customer didn’t Google you this time.
She opened ChatGPT and typed: “best interior designer in Pune for a 2BHK, budget under ₹5 lakh.” She got three names, a line on each, and a reason to call. Yours wasn’t one of them.
She didn’t scroll to page two. There is no page two.
That shortlist is the new front page. If you want to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode, start with one uncomfortable truth: AI doesn’t pick the best business. It picks the business it can understand and trust from what is written about it online.
And more of your buyers now ask. India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, second only to the US. Google’s AI Mode answers in Hindi and seven more Indian languages. For a growing share of customers, the first shortlist now comes from a machine, not a friend.
Most Indian small businesses are missing from these answers for a fixable reason: the web tells a messy, half-finished story about them. This guide shows how AI chooses, a 15-minute test to see what it says about you today, and a 7-day plan to fix the story. You can do most of it yourself.
How do ChatGPT and Google AI decide which business to recommend?
AI tools don’t know your business. They read about it, then summarise what they read. If the web says little about you, or says it inconsistently, you get left out. That is the whole game.
But they don’t all read the same things.
Google’s AI (AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini) reads Google’s own data first: your Google Business Profile, Maps reviews and photos, plus websites in Google’s index. In SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, Gemini got business details right every time because it is grounded in Google Maps. ChatGPT and Perplexity got them right only about 68% of the time (Search Engine Land).
ChatGPT works more like a researcher with a library card. It searches the web and reads what it finds. Since July 2026 it also pulls reviews, photos and business details licensed from Yelp (Axios). Where that kind of data is thin, it leans on the open web: your website, your listings, news mentions and whatever else it can find about you.
Two findings should change how you think about this.
AI is far pickier than Google. SOCi studied about 350,000 business locations. Google’s local 3-pack showed 35.9% of them. ChatGPT recommended 1.2%, and the ones it picked averaged 4.3 stars (Search Engine Land).
Ranking on Google doesn’t guarantee a mention. A 2026 study of Google AI Overviews found that nearly 30% of the sites it cited did not appear on the first page of results at all (Measuring Google AI Overviews, ACM). The AI chooses sources its own way.
One honest caveat: both studies use US data. Nobody has published solid numbers for Indian small businesses yet, and India is not a copy of the US.
Why India needs its own playbook
Most guides on this topic are written for America, where Yelp is the default review site and now feeds ChatGPT directly. Yelp has little presence in India. Here, local trust lives on Google Maps, Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo and Zomato. And a lot of it lives somewhere no AI can see: WhatsApp.
Think about how your best customers found you. A cousin’s recommendation in a family group. A number forwarded in a housing society chat. That word of mouth is real, and it is invisible to every AI tool. The praise exists. It just isn’t written anywhere public.
So for an Indian business, the job is to move that trust into the open: onto your Google profile as reviews, onto Indian platforms as consistent listings, and onto a website ChatGPT can read. The test below shows you where to start.
Test it first: what does AI say about you today?
Fifteen minutes and a Google Sheet.
Write five questions your real buyers ask before they buy. Not your keywords. Their questions, with the details they would add:
- “Best interior designer in Pune for a 2BHK under ₹5 lakh”
- “Which skin clinic in Indore is good for acne scars?”
- “Reliable cotton fabric supplier in Surat for bulk orders”
- “Lucknow mein bridal makeup artist, budget 30,000”
Run each one in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Ask at least one in Hindi or Hinglish if that is how your customers talk. For every answer, note three things.
Who got named. These are your real competitors in AI search, and they may not be the ones you fight on Google.
Which sources were cited. Justdial? A city blog? A competitor’s FAQ page? This is your map of where AI looks in your category.
What it says about you, and whether it’s wrong. Old address, closed branch, wrong price range. AI repeats stale facts with full confidence.
Run each question twice. Answers shift between sessions, so one result is a snapshot, not a rank.
The 7-day plan to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
You don’t need an agency for this. You need one focused hour a day.
| Day | Task | Time |
| 1 | Write your one-line description | 30 min |
| 2 | Complete your Google Business Profile | 1–2 hrs |
| 3 | Match your details on every listing | 1 hr |
| 4 | Ask 10–20 customers for specific reviews | 30 min |
| 5–6 | Build an FAQ page with ₹ answers | 2–3 hrs |
| 7 | Unblock AI crawlers and test again | 30 min |
Day 1: Write one sentence about your business, and use it everywhere.
What you do, for whom, where. “Modular kitchens and full-home interiors for 2BHK and 3BHK flats in Pune, from ₹4 lakh.” AI connects facts that repeat. If Instagram says “luxury spaces”, Google says “interior contractor” and Justdial says “furniture shop”, the AI sees three different businesses and trusts none of them.
Day 2: Complete your Google Business Profile.
This is the biggest single lever for Google’s AI. Choose the most precise primary category and add secondary ones. List every service with a short description and a ₹ price or range. Set accurate hours, including festival and holiday hours. Upload real photos of your storefront, team and finished work. Put your Day 1 sentence near the top of the description, and post an update every week or two. A profile that looks alive gets read as a business that is alive.
Day 3: Make your details match everywhere.
Same business name, address, phone number and one-line description on Justdial, IndiaMART if you sell B2B, your Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile, Facebook page and any category platform you use, like Practo, Zomato or WedMeGood. Match them character for character. “Shop 4, Baner Road” and “Shop No. 4, Baner Rd., Pune” look the same to you. To a machine matching records, they are a question mark.
Day 4: Ask for reviews that say something.
Message your last 10 to 20 happy customers on WhatsApp with a direct review link. Ask them to mention what you did and where: “bridal makeup for my wedding in Lucknow”, “kitchen redesign in our Baner flat”. A review like that tells AI what you’re good at and where you work. “Nice service 👍” tells it nothing. Reply to every review, including the bad ones. Never buy reviews or write them yourself. It breaks Google’s rules, and a profile that gets cleaned up later loses far more than it gained.
Days 5–6: Build an FAQ page that answers like a human.
List the 10 questions your team hears on calls and WhatsApp every week: price, timelines, process, what’s included, which areas you serve. Answer each in two or three plain sentences, direct answer first, with a ₹ figure wherever you can give one. A clean question followed by a clean answer is easy for AI to quote. No website? Put the same answers into your Google profile’s services and posts, and build a simple one-page site soon. Without a site, ChatGPT has very little of your own to read.
Day 7: Make sure AI can read your site, then test again.
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot, your pages won’t appear in ChatGPT’s search answers. OpenAI says so in its own crawler documentation. If your site runs on Cloudflare or a WordPress security plugin, check its AI bot settings too, because some block AI crawlers. Then run your five questions again and note what changed. Don’t expect much yet. Some fixes show up in days. Most take weeks.
Get mentioned where AI looks
Your own profile says what you claim. Other sites say what people think of you. AI reads both, and trusts the second more.
Go back to your test sheet and look at the cited sources. Start there, because that is where AI already looks for your category. In Indian cities, the usual suspects are:
- City guides and “best of” lists: LBB, local blogs, city pages of national newspapers
- Category platforms: Practo for clinics, Zomato for restaurants, WedMeGood for wedding vendors, IndiaMART for suppliers
- Trade and industry associations that list their members
- Supplier, brand and partner pages (“authorised dealer”, “our installation partners in Pune”)
- YouTube reviews and walkthroughs by local creators
- Local news, when you have something worth covering: a new branch, a community project, a client story
One good mention on a source AI already cites beats twenty directory listings nobody reads.
This is the slow part, and the part owners most often hand over. Days 1 to 7 take a week. Earning the right mentions takes months of steady outreach.
Speak your customer’s language
A Kolhapur jeweller’s customers may ask in Marathi. A Coimbatore textile buyer may ask in Tamil. Google’s AI Mode now works in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu (Google India).
If your buyers search in their language, give AI something in that language to read. A few FAQ answers, a regional-language post on your Google profile, a Hindi version of your main service page. Reviews written in Hindi or Hinglish count too. Don’t translate your whole site on day one. Start with the five questions from your test.
What to skip
“Guaranteed ChatGPT ranking” offers. Nobody controls what an AI says, and its answers change from one session to the next. Anyone promising a fixed spot is selling hope.
Fake reviews and review swaps. The upside is small. The downside is a damaged profile.
llms.txt and schema before the basics. llms.txt is an unofficial proposal, and no file will fix a half-empty Google profile. Schema markup is worth adding once your site has real content. It is a finishing layer, not a foundation.
Polishing Instagram while Google sits empty. This is the mistake I see most with Indian owners: a beautiful grid of reels, and a Google profile with wrong hours, three photos and no services listed. Instagram builds your brand with people who already follow you. AI search reads your profile, your reviews and the wider web first.
How to track if it’s working
There is no “position 3” in an AI answer, so stop looking for one. Track three things instead.
- The monthly re-test. Same five questions, same three tools, on the first of every month. Count how often you are named out of 15 answers. That number, watched over months, is your AI visibility.
- Your analytics. In Google Analytics 4, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and look for chatgpt.com as a source. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it cites, so some of those visits arrive tagged (Clickport). Expect small numbers. Many people read the answer and call you directly.
- Your enquiries. Add “ChatGPT / Google AI” to your “how did you hear about us?” question on calls, forms and WhatsApp. This is the number that pays the bills.
The short version
Getting your business recommended by ChatGPT isn’t a hack. It is the work good businesses have always done: a clear promise, happy customers who say so in public, and people outside your shop who vouch for you. The only change is that it now has to be written down where machines can read it.
Start with the 15-minute test. It will tell you more about your business than this article can.

FAQs: Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT
Why doesn’t ChatGPT mention my business?
Usually one of three reasons. It can’t find enough about you, what it finds doesn’t match across sites, or competitors have more specific reviews and more mentions. The 15-minute test shows which one applies to you.
Can I pay to get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
No one can sell you a place in ChatGPT’s answers. Any ads ChatGPT shows are labelled and kept separate from its recommendations. What you can do is give it accurate, consistent, well-reviewed information to work with.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
If you unblock ChatGPT’s crawler, OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours to adjust. Profile and review fixes usually take a few weeks to show. Mentions on other sites build over months.
Do I need a website to be recommended by AI?
Not to start. Google’s AI can recommend you from a strong Google Business Profile. ChatGPT has far less to work with if you have no site, so build at least a simple one.
If I rank on Google, will ChatGPT recommend me too?
Not necessarily. Google and ChatGPT read different sources, and studies show strong Google rankings don’t guarantee a mention in AI answers. Test both separately.
